Underground Artist

A sculptor, a rock-climber and an artist with a history of unconventionality and innovation, Jeremy Thomley can typically be found in his workshop-slash-climbing studio on his family's Christmas tree farm in West Hattiesburg.
On a rainy March evening, Jeremy invited me to his studio where he was preparing a large propeller (pictured above, bottom right) for decommission. The work was to commissioned by a couple who it seemed had long forgotten what was supposed to be an addition to a garden fountain. Rather than let the large prop sit and collect rust, Thomley decided the work should be added to his private art gallery, which he called an "island of misfit toys," a host of metal sculptures and plaster art adorning the walls of a large culvert that redirected the subterranean waters that flow through the city. Some of the pieces, like the plaster work and custom lanterns, seen in the bottom photo, may wash away with the next flood. But, for Thomley, it may be that very sort of impermanence that inspires him to continue creating and adding to his menagerie.
